In connection with lighting Chanukah candles, many women and girls, who do not light candles, ask whether they are required to be present during the candle lighting and whether they fulfill their obligation if they were not present. Unknown to many, in addition to this query, not being present by candle lighting of the father of the home also enters one into a question regarding the blessing of Sheasa Nissim. You see, this blessing is different than a regular blessing said over a Mitzvah, as the Sages required this blessing to be said even if one is not lighting candles, as when he sees a lit Menorah of another person he is to praise Hashem and bless him for “making miracles for our fathers”. The question thus arises as to whether a wife or daughter [or even son by the Sefaradim] that was not present by the candle lighting must recite this blessing upon seeing the candles!

How to “fix” the Kiddush wine prior to distribution to the listeners. In this first part we will introduce the issues at hand that need to be circumvented when distributing the wine. We discuss if there is a need for the listeners to drink the kiddush wine, and the concept of the person making kiddush as well as the listeners drinking unblemished, and as to the definition of blemished versus unblemished wine. In the next part on this series IYH we will tackle the various methods of wine distribution after kiddush and which ones are Halachically preferable versus those that are negated or only Bedieved.
